Godfrey Miller's "Unity in Blue" is much more interesting, but, good heavens, what a tortuous introverted technique he has wished on himself. Still, one is not here to judge whether the result justifies the means, while one cannot help but feel intrigued at a method which entails an exact deliberation of some 10,000 individually conceived spots painted over countless ruled lines. The latter are mechanical, the former are not - the result is an architecture of some nobility.
-
James Gleeson, 'Praises for galleries exhibition', The Sun, Sydney, 30 July 1952, p 4:
-
There are no dull paintings here . . .
-
. . . John Passmore transforms the precepts of Cezanne by the pressure and heat of his temperament into an act as personalised as that of Van Gogh. Formalism and Expressionism fight it out for the possession of his talent.
-
Godfrey Miller: Another devotee of Cezanne - as concentrated and exclusive as Passmore but more restrained, extraordinarily intricate yet the basic design is beautifully sustained in a web of mathematics and mosaics.

This show at the Macquarie Galleries does not introduce the works of Godfrey Miller - he has exhibited at the Macquarie Galleries before - but the "pastoral" he shows gives us another chance to see the work of an individual painter.
-
This "pastoral" is painted in Miller's usual technique.
-
He paints in small rectangles of color, which all relate to a larger shape which, in turn, relates to his frame.
-
It is an extremely laborious technique, which Miller controls with great ability.
-
Geometric
-
Miller composes his works on the geometric principles used by some early Italian painters, and later by the French cubists.
-
This small work, delectable as it is, makes us wish to see his more ambitious canvases.
-
Our Art Critic, "Artists give their Easter Show', The Sydney Morning Herald, 31 March 1953, p 2:
-
Godfrey Miller, usually a lecturer at his own University, also makes the present appearance of the great god Pan an almost foregone conclusion in "pastoral".
-
The precise architecture of his method is interrupted by an arabesque of figures most tremendous.
-
James Gleeson, 'Old Larsen dominates the Easter Show', The Sun, Sydney, 31 March 1953, p 28:
-
Next comes Godfrey Miller's pastoral that somehow or other evokes a lyric idyll out of the unlikely substance of geometry.

With Godfrey Miller the mosaic becomes a mathematical problem in "Building and Trees" - considered minutely and stated with absolute precision. Yet such is his mind that the unexpected flavour of his discoveries turns his problems into a rare presentation of reality.
-
James Gleeson, 'Sydney Group's exhibition mature, exciting', The Sun, Sydney, 1 October 1953, p 44:
-
Godfrey Miller embroiders a favourite theme in his "Building and Trees" - a picture that combines the appearance of a mosaic, the strength of a steel mesh, the business of an antheap and the flavour of lyric poetry.
-
Our Art Critic, 'Group show lively exhibition', Daily Telegraph, Sydney, 1 October 1953, p 32:
-
The geometrically composed pictures of Godfrey Miller are amongst the best in the show. He is a master of color and understatement.

Reviewed: Our Art Critic, 'Art group may be evolving its own style', The Sydney Morning Herald, Sydney, 22 September 1954, p 2:
-
Matters concerning the language of paint are not too easily defined in words. Yet in the work of John Passmore or Godfrey Miller, and to a lesser extent in that of Eric Smith, Michael Kmit, Carl Plate, Wallace Thornton and Ralph Balson, are elements bearing on such an idea, even when they are intuitive rather than reasoned. If the basis of all this is Cezanne - and in Passmore particularly, that is the source apparent - it has become clear that Cezanne is not to be followed. Within the realm of Cezanne the master is yet the enemy.
-
Neither in Passmore's "The Wave" nor in Miller's "Triglyph with Figures" does the individual shape emerge; nor is the colour subjected to naturalistic usage. Colour here evolves a method and logic of its own, which indeed it has done since the "Fauves" when, however, the more decorative elements were stressed.
-
James Cook, 'Group with confidence', Daily Telegraph, Sydney, 22 September 1954, p 22:
-
Lyndon Dadswell, Godfrey Miller and Carl Plate grope towards the hidden sources of orderly impulses, in themselves, rather than endeavour to interpret order from the external world of our common experience.
-
James Gleeson, 'Drysdale landscape is praised', The Sun, Sydney, 22 September 1954, p 36:
-
Indeed, it would be no exaggeration to say that quality and variety make this the exhibition of the year.
-
Godfrey Miller's "Triglyph with Figures" is an astonishing work in which boldness of intention sustain the elaborate and painstaking execution.
-
In the hands of a less dedicated painter such a technique could end in tedious confusion, but Miller never loses himself in his whirling tesserae of paint.
-
He directs them with the skill of an accomplished mosaicist.

-
"Easter 1955" at the Macquarie Galleries is a particularly bright affair, like a collection of coloured Easter eggs embedded in moss.
-
Even Godfrey Miller's "Red Earth Forest" is positively jubilant, exulting in only 20 colour dots to the square inch, where formerly there were 50.
-
But if the colours dance, the architecture is more severe than ever. In all his works Miller ruminates and relives past experiences rather in the manner of Proust's Madeleine, dipped in a cup of tea.

Reviewed: James Cook, 'From Autumn to Spring', Daily telegraph, Sydney, 21 September 1955, p 14:
-
The romantic attitude prevailing, painting is pursued here with emphasis on the artist as an adventuring spirit or unique personality, and, for the greater part, with some disdain for that reservoir of knowledge handled down by tradition from the brightest enquiring minds of the past.
-
Coming closest to exceptions from this is Jean Bellette's bold "Coastal Still Life", Godfrey Miller's infinitely patient, disciplined works, and the clearly woven decorations by Paul Haefliger.
-
In these, as with Drysdale's "Green Peignoir" (very out of place in this show), a steadying element of self-criticism is most present.
-
This is part of a transplanted French-English regard for clarity and logic.
Our Art Critic, 'Contemporary art by the Sydney Group', The Sydney Morning Herald, Sydney, 21 September 1955, p 2:
-
Godfrey Miller's "Landscape With Orange Cliffs", surely his best painting to date, is a remarkably controlled effort. Clearly, here is a painter who will not trust his emotions, but confines them within the most complicated structural network. It is as if he wished to defeat vagueness and the vagaries of passing moods, with the imposition of an unyielding discipline. In this he exceeds beyond expectations, and through this tortuous method he attains a monumental simplicity and synthesis.

In the exhibition at David Jones' Art Gallery, called "Australian Artists of Note", one painting only - Godfrey Miller's "Still life with Lute" - argues here the possibility of notable art in Sydney . . .
-
Miller's work, so introspective, so tentative, arriving at any sort of statement only after countless trials, has none of those explosive qualities which alone could shatter the general lethargy. Miller's work must be discovered, like a pearl in a sty, it must be cherished, it will not respond but to the caressing glance. It fears competition and alien atmospheres. But give it pride of place and it will shed its dull lustre and enrich its forms. Not the strongest of art, this, brittle rather and entirely personal.

Comment: on none of paintings being for sale, Miller was quoted [unidentified source drawn from letter to McCulloch]:

I want to hang on to the small ones to take to Paris with me next month - if I go - and I want to do a bit more to some of the larger ones.
-
Miller later had some disagreement with Morley [whose idea the Blake Prize had been], to infer Morley's association with the Anthroposophical society and claim Morley's financial debt on dying in 1961 to himself [this led to a protest about an Art Gallery of New South Wales painting purchase funded by the Florence Turner Blake Bequest Fund, but this is not connected to the Blake Prize]

-
But if the impeccable judgments of subtle nuances and gentle inflections of tones in Bunny's "Low Tide, Brignogon" are movingly tender, these elements are also present in the stricter contemporary painter's architecture of Miller's "Summer" and "Still Life With Musical Instrument". For here, where the pointillist's discoveries are fused with cubism and the planes and shapes are again controlled by abstraction, Miller's mind orders the complexities and enlarges the personal sensibility with a degree of mystical magic.
James Gleeson, The Sun, Sydney, April 1960:
-
Two of these paintings are by Godfrey Miller.
-
It can be said with ample justification that every painting Mr Miller submits to exhibition is a masterpiece.
-
He seems never to suffer an "off" period or work through a minor phase.

A small group of paintings by Godfrey Miller will be on show in the Cell Block Theatre, East Sydney Technical College, today and tomorrow from 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.
-
Miller is one of Australia's greatest artists and this presents a rare opportunity, which should on no account be missed, of seeing some of his masterpieces.
-
One can only hope that the artist will see fit to let some more of his paintings reach the State collection.
-
The trustees of the Gallery should make every effort to secure his latest brilliant works and the Art Gallery Society could re-affirm their excellent lead by giving yet another Miller work to the Gallery.

A masterpiece, "Musical Instrument" by Godfrey Miller, completely dominates the works gathered for the Barry Stern Christmas Exhibition.
-
Miller's work can hold its own anywhere in the world, and this painting sums up a most important period of his art. The motifs of musical instrument, jug and fruit reveal the heart and spirit of a man of tremendous resources - a man whose knowledge and understanding, whose perception and breadth of vision, whose patience and masterly craft are brought to tremulous, vibrating life by the underlying nervous passion of a great artist.

. . . Ian Fairweather's Figure in Hat, Godfrey Miller's Unity in Blue, Andrew Sibley's rather Ernstlike townscape images, especially Hotel, Mt.Garnet; and to the Old Hulk by John Perceval. These few paintings, together with the few by Nolan, do not have difficulty in silencing their nearest loud neighbours, although the effect, as you walk through, remains generally and overwhelmingly, one of decibels and road-drills, of color-clatter and eye-bashing . . . when you walk out, at last, into the nearest galleries of the Tate, it takes only the slightest whiff of Matisse, or any other tolerable painter who is hanging around on the walls, to restore the confidence that painting is - something else.
